The account owner is the person with ultimate control over your Proposify account. They handle billing, can add or remove anyone, and make major account decisions. Sometimes you need to transfer this responsibility to someone else on your team.
Before You Start
Important stuff to know:
- Only the current owner can make this change
- The new owner must already be a user on your account
- This affects billing notifications and payment responsibility
- Once changed, the old owner becomes a regular user
Step-by-Step Process
Getting There
- Click Settings in your left navigation
- Select Company Info
- Scroll to the bottom of the page
- Find the Account Owner dropdown
Making the Change
- Click the dropdown menu
- Pick the new owner from your team list
- Confirm your choice
- Done! They're now the account owner
That's it. No complicated forms or waiting periods.
What Happens After the Change
For the New Owner:
- Gets full admin access
- Receives all billing emails
- Can manage the entire account
- Becomes responsible for payments
For the Old Owner:
- Becomes a regular user
- Keeps access to their documents
- Loses billing and admin privileges
- Can still work normally, just can't manage the account
For Everyone Else:
- Nothing changes for other team members
- Same access levels and permissions
- All documents and work stay put
Common Situations
Founder Moving On Company founder wants to hand over account management to someone else? Easy transfer keeps everything running smoothly.
Billing Changes Need someone else to handle payments and invoices? Change the owner and billing notifications go to them automatically.
Management Restructure Team lead changes or department shifts? Update the owner to match your new structure.
Someone's Leaving If your current owner is leaving the company, transfer ownership first, then remove them as a user.
Things to Consider
Pick Someone Reliable The account owner has serious power. Choose someone who'll stick around and handle the responsibility well.
Communication Let your team know about ownership changes, especially if it affects who they go to with account questions.
Billing Setup Make sure the new owner has access to payment methods and knows how billing works.
Quick Tips
Plan Ahead If you know someone's leaving, transfer ownership before their last day. Don't get stuck with account access issues.
Test Access After the change, have the new owner log in and confirm they can access billing and settings.
Keep Records Note who owns the account and when changes happen. Helpful for your own records and any future transitions.
Troubleshooting
Don't See Someone in the Dropdown? They need to be added as a user first. You can't make someone owner if they're not already on your account.
Change Didn't Work? Refresh the page and check again. If you're still having issues, you might not have owner permissions yourself.
Need to Change It Back? Only the current owner can transfer ownership. If you made a mistake, ask the new owner to change it back.
