Inline Commenting enables teams to collaborate more effectively by allowing users to add contextual feedback directly on specific text within documents. This powerful feature transforms the review process by creating focused discussions exactly where they're needed, eliminating the confusion of disconnected feedback and streamlining the approval workflow.
How Inline Commenting Works
The commenting system acts as your team's conversation layer on top of documents. Highlight any text and add a comment – it's instantly visible to your entire team. No more scattered feedback emails or confusion about which version someone reviewed.
When reviewing documents, simply highlight text and attach comments from either the editor or preview mode. Each comment supports full discussion threads, and you can set any comment as internal or external to control visibility. This keeps sensitive team discussions private while preparing appropriate feedback for clients.
Adding Comments to Your Documents
Creating a New Comment
- Open your document in the Editor or Preview
- Click on the commenting button at the top of the page to switch to commenting mode.
- Once in commenting mode, highlight any text in your document to comment on it.
- Select visibility: Comments made in the editor will be marked as Private by default. Toggle this to make comments visible to clients.
- Click Add Comment to save the comment.
Resolving Comments
Mark comments as resolved when feedback has been addressed:
- Find the comment in commenting mode
- Click the Resolve Button at the top of the thread
- Access resolved comments by clicking on “Resolved” in the comment header.
Comment Visibility Settings
Internal vs. External Comments
Internal Comments remain completely hidden from client view:
- Perfect for internal team discussions
- Ideal for technical notes and reminders
- Great for work-in-progress feedback
External Comments will be visible to clients:
- Appropriate for client questions
- Useful for highlighting options or choices
- Good for explaining changes or updates
Notifications
You'll receive notifications anytime someone comments on your document or replies in threads you are part of. You'll also see comment in the notification panel in Proposify.
